Position Reports To: ANE Team Leader

Positions Supervised: India staff

Overview:

The Country Director will manage and increase the visibility of Jhpiego country programs in the areas of maternal, reproductive and child health including HIV/AIDS. Other activities include coordinating activity programming, action plan formulation and presentation of Jhpiego activities in-country, financial oversight, business development activities and donor interactions. The Country Director is the primary contact for all information and requests for technical or programmatic assistance for new or ongoing Jhpiego activities in India.

Responsibilities:

  • Advanced degree in public health or related field with 10+ years' successful implementation and management of field-based international health programs
  • Technical expertise in two or more of the following areas: maternal, newborn and child health, reproductive health training, HIV/AIDS, pre-service education, quality assurance, program design, planning, implementation, and management
  • Significant background in the management of international maternal, newborn and child health, reproductive health and/or HIV/AIDS programs in India
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and lead teams operating in complex environments
  • Thorough understanding of and ability to analyze financial documents, projections, expenditures and accruals
  • Knowledge of international and U.S. donor agencies and private sector foundations policies
  • Comprehensive understanding of Jhpiego's approaches to training, performance and quality improvement
  • Proven field leadership and management skills
  • Capacity for analyzing technical problems and issues which impede efforts to provide improved health care to populations and ability to develop technical solutions to these problems/issues
  • Demonstrated ability to provide technical leadership to develop innovative country programs
  • Excellent verbal, written and presentation skills in English
  • Excellent skills in facilitation, team building and coordination
  • Ability to develop productive working relationships with counterparts in other agencies and organizations worldwide
  • Ability to communicate effectively, instilling trust and confidence
  • Strong business development skills, including proposal management and writing as well as negotiating with partner organizations
  • Aware of and sensitivity to issues related to working with multi-cultural groups in multiple socio-economic settings
  • Ability to travel within India up to 30% time

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • BA or equivalent with 2+ years’ program and administrative experience
  • Understanding of global health and development approaches
  • Knowledge of administrative processes and approaches and financial reporting and reconciliation
  • Knowledge of contracts and global program operations
  • Ability to work in a complex environment with multiple tasks, short deadlines and intense pressure to perform
  • Proficiency in writing and editing letters, reports and documents
  • Ability to interact skillfully and diplomatically with numerous counterparts, both domestically and internationally
  • Strong decision-making skills and results-oriented approach
  • Aware of and sensitive to working in multiple socio-economic settings and with multi-cultural groups in a developing country environment
  • Comfortable with a team approach to programming and the ability to manage several major activities simultaneously
  • Availability to travel independently in new environments
  • Proficiency in MS Office

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Fluency in Hindi desirable
  • Degree in Medicine, Nursing/Midwifery or Public Health
  • Thorough knowledge of agencies working in the health sector in India
