Jhpiego hosts congressional briefing on the ACCESS Program

18 May 2007

Jhpiego and the Congressional Caucus for Women's Issues hosted a briefing on 18 May 2007 about the ACCESS Program, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID)'s flagship maternal and neonatal health program. ACCESS, a 5-year global program, currently operates in 25 developing countries, striving to bring coverage, access and use of high-quality health care services as close to home as possible. Jhpiego implements the program in partnership with Save the Children, Constella Futures, the Academy for Educational Development, the American College of Nurse-Midwives and IMA World Health.

More than 30 congressional staffers heard from a distinguished panel of health care experts, including Mr. Richard Greene (Director of the Office of Health, Infectious Diseases and Nutrition, Global Health Bureau, USAID). Mr. Greene discussed USAID's priorities in maternal and newborn health. Dr. Koki Agarwal (Director, ACCESS) provided an overview of the program, with country case studies offered by Prof. Emmanuel Otolorin (Regional Senior Technical Advisor, Jhpiego/Nigeria) and Ms. Hannah Gibson (Chief of Party, ACCESS-SSP, Afghanistan). Dr. Leslie Mancuso (Jhpiego President and CEO) moderated the panel and summarized the presentations for the audience at the end of the session.

This congressional briefing is the latest in a series conducted by Jhpiego. Previous briefings have addressed cervical cancer, malaria in pregnancy, Afghan midwifery and post-tsunami health care for women in Indonesia. Presentation Notes:

About ACCESS
The ACCESS Program is the U.S. Agency for International Development's global program to improve maternal and newborn health. The ACCESS Program works to expand coverage, access and use of key maternal and newborn health services across a continuum of care from the household to the hospital—with the aim of making quality health services accessible for women and newborns. Jhpiego implements the program in partnership with Save the Children, Constella Futures, the Academy for Educational Development, the American College of Nurse-Midwives and IMA World Health.

About Jhpiego
