Jhpiego President and CEO responds to Asia tsunami disaster

05 January 2005

Baltimore, Md. – Dr. Leslie Mancuso, President and CEO of Jhpiego, today issued the following statement in response to the Asia tsunami disaster:

"The catastrophe that has befallen the people of South Asia is nearly unimaginable. Our hearts go out to all affected by this tragedy. We stand with you as you attempt to rebuild your communities and your lives.

For more than thirty years, Jhpiego has been active in this region, especially Indonesia. Working with national health care organizations and our network of doctors, nurses and midwives, we have a strong record of bringing high-quality health care services to women and families throughout Indonesia.

Our commitment to Indonesia has only intensified since disaster struck. We are currently helping reestablish health care services in affected regions. Our staff was among the group of aid workers deployed by the government of Indonesia to assess conditions in battered Aceh Province. Working with the Ministry of Health, our dedicated in-country staff and local private sector partners, Jhpiego is committed to providing health care services in Indonesia during the days, months and years to come."

About Jhpiego
For nearly 40 years, Jhpiego, (pronounced "ja-pie-go"), has empowered front-line health workers by designing and implementing simple, low-cost, hands-on solutions that strengthen the delivery of health care services, following the household-to-hospital continuum of care. We partner with community- to national-level organizations to build sustainable, local capacity through advocacy, policy and guidelines development, and quality and performance improvement approaches.
