ACCESS Program launches Web site
17 October 2005
Baltimore, Md. – Web users now have a new
resource for improving maternal and newborn health worldwide. To help bring high-quality
health services for women and newborns as close to the family as possible, the
Access to Clinical and Community Maternal, Neonatal and Women’s Health Services
(ACCESS) Program launched its Web site:
www.accesstohealth.org.
The ACCESS Web site is a valuable resource for policy makers,
the media, the general public, and U.S. Agency for International Development
(USAID) missions seeking information about maternal and child health issues.
In addition to information about the USAID-sponsored
program, the Web site features materials on reducing maternal and newborn deaths
and improving the lives of mothers and their newborns. There is also a section
tailored to the specific needs of USAID missions who may want to get involved in
the program.
"The Web site is the link for people to get information on health care
issues across the household to hospital continuum for maternal and newborn health,"
said Dr. Koki Agarwal, ACCESS Program Director. "Resources include publications
on community interventions, clinical interventions, and policy and advocacy—as well
as special initiatives in malaria during pregnancy, postpartum hemorrhage,
mother-to-child transmission of HIV/AIDS and newborn health."
The ACCESS Program works with USAID missions, governments,
local communities and partner agencies in developing countries to achieve
sustainable improvements in maternal and newborn health and survival. Issues
addressed by the ACCESS Program and Web site include: the enabling environment
for safe motherhood and newborn health, birth preparation, antenatal care, safe
delivery, postpartum care for mother and newborn, normal newborn care,
treatment of obstetric complications and basic care for sick newborns.
ACCESS also supports and promotes a continuum of care in
women’s health across the life cycle, including family planning, prevention and
treatment of cervical cancer, sexually transmitted infections and HIV/AIDS.

ACCESS Web site.
