Jhpiego medical director receives prestigious FOGSI Fellowship

Baltimore, Maryland—Jhpiego’s vice-president and medical director, Dr. Harshad Sanghvi, will receive the Indian College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists of the Federation of Obstetric & Gynaecological Societies of India’s (FOGSI) Honorary Fellowship— at the College’s Convocation on February 4, 2008 at 5:30pm at the Hotel Ashoka in New Delhi. The honorary fellowship is awarded to individuals who have made exceptional contribution to women’s health and FOGSI.
Dr. Harshad Sanghvi’s professional background is in obstetrics and gynecology as well as clinical epidemiology. He is responsible for providing leadership and oversight for Jhpiego’s technical assistance programs in over 50 countries leading the development of innovative clinical approaches for low resource settings and provides strategic guidance to health ministries around the world. Dr. Sanghvi is also a senior associate at the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health.
Over the last five years, Dr. Sanghvi has led the effort to develop a global pool of maternal and neonatal health experts focused on new and innovative approaches for reducing mortality from postpartum hemorrhage. Since 2004, Dr. Sanghvi has nurtured a partnership between Jhpiego and FOGSI to train rural medical officers in India in emergency obstetric and newborn care. In addition, he also supported an innovative program to prepare nurses and midwives to independently provide skilled care including basic emergency obstetric care at homebirth in Jharkhand, India.
The Indian College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists was formed in 1984 as an academic wing of FOGSI and is committed to improve the health status of women in India. Its mission is to develop a learning and service culture within its fellows and members, who will make a worthwhile contribution to the health of the community.
