IUD Guidelines for Family Planning Service Programs
Recent studies and literature reviews have confirmed that the intrauterine contraceptive device (IUD) is a safe and highly effective, long-term, reversible contraceptive method that is appropriate for use by most women, and that health risks associated with the method are negligible. There is a worldwide resurgence of interest in this method, as well as an increased demand for well-trained staff who exhibit up-to-date knowledge, attitudes and skills in providing IUD services. This reference manual is part of Jhpiego's revised and updated learning package, which reflects the World Health Organization's latest recommendations. Although the manual can be used in the context of IUD service delivery, it is designed to work primarily as a reference document during clinical training. (3rd edition, 2006) Available in English. (2nd edition, 1995, available in Portuguese, Russian and Spanish.) Jhpiego's IUD learning package is also part of the IUD Toolkit—an online resource compiled by members of the IUD Subcommittee of USAID's Maximizing Access and Quality Initiative.
